Eating and exploring our way through the world

Coastal Flats

This weekend, the Husband and I headed to Northern Virginia to see some of our good friends and to go tubing down the Shenandoah River, an annual summer tradition with them.  It was great and relaxing and the perfect weather for such a trip! In order to get as much time as possible with friends and family, I planned a return flight for Sunday evening.  This allowed a good amount of time in order to schedule a later lunch with both the Husband’s parents and mine.

Our parents live over an hour away from each other so they don’t often get together.  Luckily, there is a good urban area generally halfway between their homes and we invited them to meet us there for lunch.  There are a number of restaurants to choose from there, but one in particular was calling my name: Coastal Flats.

Coastal Flats is part of the Great American Restaurant chain, a group of very tasty Northern Virginia restaurants.  Coastal Flats has two locations, one in Tysons Corner (the location we visited) and one in Fairfax, VA.  It has a seafood, beachy theme.  Although the Tysons Corner one is located in the mall, they did a great job of designing the restaurant to make you forget that you’re in a mall.

A common item across the Great American Restaurant locations is a Champagne vinagarette and grilled Goat Cheese on their salads.  I knew it was a must have and why I chose to go to Coastal Flats with our parents!  As a result, I knew I would definitely have a salad 🙂

To start, I ordered the Warm Goat Cheese & Spiced Pecan Salad.  It had mixed field greens, dried cranberries, cherry tomatoes, grilled goat cheese, and champagne vinagarette.  It also had croutons and one potato (must have fallen in from the other salad bowls in the back!).  It was so tasty!

As an entree, I ordered the Grilled Chicken and Havarti Cheese sandwich with roasted red peppers and field greens.  It normally comes with a citrus mayo, which I asked for on the side.  I also subbed the fries for sweet potato fries.  I ate half and saved the rest for dinner on the flight home.

The Husband (and both his parents and my mom) ordered the Coastal Roast Chicken Salad with avacado, grape tomatoes, almonds, and champagne vinagarette.  He added goat cheese to his as well (but fresh instead of grilled).  He enjoyed his food as well!

During our meal, we each had at least one of their delicious rolls (I don’t recall what they’re called, but they’re so doughy and delicious and they serve it with a tasty whipped butter).  A must have at any of the Great American Restaurants!

We all decided that we were satisfied with our meals and chose not to splurge on dessert.  If any of you do go there, I recommend pretty much anything on the menu as well as all items on the dessert menu! (In particular, friends of mine love the Warm Flourless Chocolate Waffle.)

Have any of you been to any of the Great American Restaurants? What did you think?
