Center Street Grille

Posted by Amanda @ The Hungry Wanderers on February 28, 2010

When the Husband and I were in Northern Virginia a few weekends ago, we met up with his parents for lunch on Valentine’s Day in Manassas, VA.  We headed to Center St. Grille as it was close to the Husband’s mom’s new office that we wanted to check out.

Upon reviewing the menu, I quickly came upon this note that made me happy 🙂

IMG_1941 I also enjoyed the fun water glasses!

They had both brunch and lunch options and while I originally planned on brunch, both the Husband and I ended up ordering lunch items.

First, we each started with chili – mine with just cheese and his with cheese and onions.  This chili was quite good! It was spicy, but not overly so, and the choice of cheese was excellent!

For my entree, I ordered a roasted veggie wrap.  It included seasonal veggies roasted with a balsamic glaze.  It was supposed to have goat cheese or feta in it as well, but didn’t.  However, it was so very good without the cheese! The fries were one of my favorite kinds as well – a little bit of substance to them on the outside (perhaps beer battered?). Yum!

The Husband ordered a Buffalo Chicken Wrap with house made chips.  He really liked his dish as well 🙂

I took a picture of my father-in-law’s meal (1) because I loved the colors and (2) it was something I considered ordering.  He had an egg scramble with ham, cheese, and tomatoes.  He thought this was really good too!

Overall, I think we were all very impressed with our meal! I was expecting just a ho-hum, diner lunch and the quality of the food was much better than that.  If you find yourself in Old Town/Downtown Manassas, we definitely recommend Center St. Grille!

Just Around the Corner

Posted by gingerbreadpirate on November 20, 2009

As I was driving around downtown Atlanta, I saw this little hole in the wall in the Southwest corner of Centennial Park.  The moment I saw it, I thought, “I NEED to get down here and have lunch at some point.”  It looked like a little greasy spoon with lots of personality.

It had personality, but it wasn’t the diamond in the rough I was looking for; more like a lump of coal.

It was everything I dreamed it could be.  I walked in, and checked out the menu. It reminded me a bit of Primanti Bros., but not as branded.

There’s actually more to the menu, but the store is so narrow that this is all I could get into the shot!  It took me forever to decide if  I wanted a burger or cheesesteak.  After deliberating the pros and cons, as if I were deciding between renting or buying a home, I decided on the cheesesteak.   I also added a side of chili cheese fries.  My co-worker ordered a burger.

The fries were yumtastic, as one might expect for fresh fries with canned cheese and chili loaded on top, but the cheesesteak was awfully lackluster.  The meat was pretty dry.  I didn’t really find any cheese, and I think the “special sauce” was so lightly applied that I couldn’t really tell if the sauce was any good, or if the meat had been seasoned.

Doumar’s

Posted by Amanda @ The Hungry Wanderers on August 15, 2009

Knowing how much the Husband loves ice cream, my sister did some research and found that the Doumar family invented the ice cream cone and that their restaurant and ice cream shop is near by in Norfolk!  Today we discovered that Doumar’s also serve breakfast and lunch and headed there to get lunch before the necessary ice cream treat 🙂

As a little background, Doumar’s is a family-owned/run restaurant that has been in Norfolk since 1934 (there have been a couple remodels since then).  Additionally, it has been featured on the Food Network.

Upon arrival, we found that waitresses deliver food to the cars or you can eat inside.

The place had a super cute diner feel to it.

You can also go in and order take out.

We waited a short while until a table for six opened up.  We dived right into the menus and were amazed at the prices!

The Husband and I both ordered Grilled Cheese (his with bacon).  My sister ordered a hot dog while my brother-in-law and sister-in-law ordered cheeseburgers.  My brother got a steak sandwich.  Five of us ordered a side of fries 🙂

I also splurged and got a Cherry Coke (I don’t normally get soda) and my brother and his wife split a Vanilla Shake.  (It was a bit too thick at first so they had to let it melt a bit.)

They had this hot sauce that was awesome! In the tastiness way (not the spiciness way).  I meant to ask the waiter what it was but forgot 😦

Everyone was very happy with their lunch!  But we couldn’t wait for dessert 🙂

We all got ice cream cones!

The cones, especially the cone itself, were delicious! So fresh tasting!!  Definitely recommend this place if you like ice cream cones 🙂

Ooh, I almost forgot! They make their cones fresh daily with the original cone maker!
